Vellaripravinte Changathi Movie Review

Director Akku Akbar’s Vellaripravinte Changathi is about a cinema-within-cinema. There are visuals of an old film, which was shot in the 1970’s and then, the story investigates what happened to the characters later on. You have to admire the honesty with which the film has been made, but still one can’t help feeling that this one could have been much better!

Manikkunju (Indrajith) gets a job in the famous Gemini film lab and soon after, he finds a film can where the reels of an unfinished 1970’s film titled Vellaripravinte Changathi that never got released, at some corner of the store room. The film had two newcomers in the lead- Shajahan, who played Ravi (Dileep) and Mary Varghese, who played Sulekha (Kavya).

Now we watch the whole film along with Manikkunju and a few others, inside a preview theatre. The film, which is said to have a path breaking story, turns out to be a rather boring romance between a Hindu boy and his neighbor, a Muslim girl.

It is soon told that the lead pair was having a torrid romance, during the shooting of the film. Once the preview is over, the attention shifts to the question of what happened to the love birds after the shooting. And things end up in a rather disappointingly melodramatic way.

The obvious question here is; which one is the actual romance in the film? Is it the reel life affair between Ravi and Sulekha or the real life one between Shajahan and Mary Varghese?

In all fairness, director Akku Akbar and scenarist G S Anil have tried to have a different pattern, but it is just that they failed to package it in a spectacular way. The cinematographers, Vipin Mohan and Sameer Haq, have done a good job. Music director Mohan Sithara’s tunes are superb and the music takes the viewer to those years, in a highly effective way.

If you are ready to forget his mimicry of Prem Nazir’s style during one of the scenes and his odd make up during the final sequences, Dileep has done a decent job. As always, Kavya looks the same in all the phases and here it is all too evident when she acts in her trademark style even in the 70’s as well. The rest of the cast including Manoj K Jayan, Indrajith, Sai Kumar, Vijayaraghavan, Ramu and Mamukoya have done their parts pretty well.

It is evident that some real hard work has gone into the making of Vellaripravinte Changathi , which should be appreciated. But still, the film ends up as a half baked one, at best.

Kavya, happy with her dubbing

After some time, Kavya Madhavan is pretty happy with the good Box Office run of his 'Venicile Vyapari' for more than one reason. Apart from being the heroine of the movie,that too with Mammootty , Kavya is also appreciated for the dubbing of her character in her own voice.

Kavya complains that she is not always allowed to dub for her characters, as the voices of dubbing artists are preferred over her husky, baser voice with a slight Neeleshwaram accent. But whenever she had dubbed for her characters, she had been able to do more justice to her on-screen performances.

Kavya had lent her voice for a few more recent films like 'Gaddhama' and 'Bhakthajanangalude Shradhakku'. But directors of films like 'Christian Brothers', and 'China Town' opted for other voices to fill the screen face of the actress who had been honoured many times with the State Awards for great acting performances.

Vellaripravinte Changathi postponed to Christmas Day

The Dileep Kavya romantic and nostalgic Akku Akbar directed Vellaripravinte Changathi , which was to release on Friday has been pushed by two days to Christmas day (December 25).

The film has been postponed due to delay in completion and censoring of the film. It is releasing in 70 odd screens in Kerala.

Vellaripravinte Changathi is ‘cinema within cinema’ and talks about the off screen romance of a lead pair, during the making of their debut film in the 1970's.

The film was never completed and the reels of the film are now recovered at the corner of a film lab.

Venicile Vyapari Malayalam Movie Review

Director Shafi’s Venicile Vyapari (The Merchant of Venice) is happening in the 1980's and it is essentially about the unveiling of a murder mystery. Scripted by ‘Classmates’ fame James Albert, the film has an engaging first half which is full of dramatic twists and turns, but things tend to be a bit too predictable from then on.

Pavithran (Mammootty), a constable in a police station in Alappuzha, is sent to investigate the murder of a local coir worker Ajayan (Biju Menon). As some of the cops who had gone there for investigation were brutally manhandled by the powerful landlords in the area, Pavithran disguises himself as a coir trader. Some smart moves later, he becomes a rich businessman and quits his job as a constable. Ammu (Kavya Madhavan), who incidentally is Ajayan’s sister, falls in love with Pavithran.

With several characters, plots and sub plots which are packed pretty neatly, the story develops in a gripping manner. But things get annoying after a while as the incidents move ahead without any surprises. The repeated attempts to boost the hero make the proceedings quite melodramatic as well and the old fashioned narrative doesn’t help matters either. Shamdutt’s camera and Bijibal’s music are fine.

The ill fitting wigs, big collars and shirts with pockets on both chests could give an eighties feel, but there is nothing much beyond that to remind those times. Shafi, who is mainly known for his laugh riots, is evidently not too comfortable with the ‘whodunit’ thriller. James Albert has used several SMS jokes to bring in the laughs but quite often it sounds repetitive and ineffective.

Also, it is quite surprising that an actor of Mammootty’s stature decided to mimic yesteryear hero Jayan in the Kannum kannum… song from the 1980 hit ‘Angaadi’. Still he comes up with an impressive performance in the film. The rest of the cast including Kavya Madhavan, Poonam Bajwa, Suraj Venjarammoodu, Salim Kumar, Jagathy Sreekumar, Vijayaraghavan, Suresh Krishna, Janardhanan and Sreeraman have performed their roles in a nice way.

In an effort to narrate a story which happened some decades back, Venicile Vyapari ends up as a film in a rather outdated pattern, especially during the crunch situations. The feeling of ‘haven’t we watched all these several times before?’ may come to your mind during most sequences. Of course, the film has some nice moments in between and could be an okay one time watch.

Kavya's marriage with Nishal Chandra was officially annulled

Popular Malayalam actress Kavya Madhavan's marriage with Nischal Chandra was officially annulled on Monday by the Ernakulam family court. Kavya and Chandra were married in February 2009.

The couple decided to separate in October last year and filed a joint divorce petition at the court. The settlement came after several rounds of talks. According to George Sebastian, a Kerala Congress leader who mediated in the talks, both parties appeared in the court on May 24 to finalize the proceedings.

Kavya agreed to withdraw the two complaints filed against Chandran and his family as part of the settlement. (She had earlier filed a dowry harassment complaint against Chandra and his family.)

As the most popular actress of Malayalam, Kavya Madhavan has started the year with a winning note converting many of her comeback films into hits and now winning a state award for her performance in 'Gaddhama', the actress seems to be going in the right tracks. She will also receive the verdict of her divorce petition from Ernakulam family court on this Saturday. The petition was moved by actor Kavya Madhavan and her estranged husband Nishal Chandra, a couple of months ago.

Kavya and Nishal appeared before the court on last Wednesday for the hearing on the divorce case and the court then sent them for counseling.But as the Councillor could not find any amicable solutions to their differences of opinion, they were allowed to submit a non objection certificate before the High Court. Kavya was married to Nishal Chandra, a software engineer based in Kuwait, in December 2008, but within an year the actress was found back home with complaints of mental and physical torture.

Kavya has told reporters that now she will be concentrating more on her films from this June and will look for better characters which will satisfy the actress in her and also her fans.

The Ernakulam family court will deliver the judgment on the divorce petition jointly submitted by actress Kavya Madhavan and Nishal Chandra on Today.

Both Kavya and Chandra appeared at the court on Wednesday afternoon and signed the divorce agreement. The actress and her husband, a bank employee in Kuwait, informed the court that they want to separate by mutual consent.

Kavya agreed to withdraw the two complaints filed against Chandran and his family as part of the settlement. She had earlier filed a dowry harassment complaint under Section 498 A of the IPC against Chandra and his family. The couple were married in December 2008.

May 19, 2011: The National Film awards 2010 will be announced today. Seven Malayalam films, Pranchiyettan, Makara Manju, Kavya Madhavan's Gaddama, Veetilekkulla Vazhi, Athmakatha, Janaki and Adaminte Makan Abu have been nominated for the National Film Awards, 2010.

After Santhosh Sivan's much acclaimed period film Urumi, in which he played a brave warrior who wants to kill the Portuguese Empire Vasco da Gama, Kerala-born Tamil actor Arya has signed his second Malayalam film.

According to sources, the talented actor will don the lead in Ananthabhadrasanam, a sequel to Santosh Sivan's Anandabhadram (2005), starring Prithviraj and Kavya Madhavan in the lead.

Sunil Parameshwaran, who scripted for the original, has almost completed the script and the sequel will be directed by Santhosh Sivan himself. The talks on the final crew and cast are still on. More details will be announced soon.

Kerala State film awards 2010: Jury recast

The jury of the Kerala State film awards has been reconstituted after actor Menaka Suresh and music director Johnson quit the panel, citing their dates clashes with the screening schedule drawn up to suit the convenience of jury chairman Buddhadeb Dasgupta.

Sources said that their difficulty to agree with the revised screening schedule had compelled them to quit. Writer Savithri Rajeevan and musician Kavalam Sreekumar have been nominated to fill the vacancies, a spokesman for Culture Minister M.A. Baby said.

The original plan was to complete the screening and declare the awards before May 10. But as Dasgupta had to attend some projects during the period, the screenings were rescheduled.

“Dasgupta will be available only from May 10, but Menaka and Johnson have some earlier commitments to meet. As they expressed their inconvenience, we decided to replace them with two new members,” the spokesman said.

Ever since she campaigned for a candidate in the recently concluded Kerala Assembly elections, there was a buzz that Kavya Madhavan, who is currently busy with her second innings in cinema, will pursue politics too.

However, the actress has sought to put full-stop to such reports. “Ganesh Kumar is a member of AMMA (Association of Malayalam Movies Artistes). So I campaigned for him,” she says.

“Please don’t mix films and politics. My sole priority is acting now and I will not enter politics,” Kavya says and adds: “I am apolitical and I am not attached to any political ideology.”

Meanwhile, Kavya, who is popular in Kollywood too, recently wrote her SSLC exams as a private student in a public school near Aluva. Since she started her film career as a child artiste and became popular very soon, she had to drop studies.

Suma (Kavya Madhvan) lives her life in regret; at having chosen to elope with Vishwam (Irshad) against her family's words. Post marriage and two kids, Vishwam has metamorphosed into a brash drunkard, with a penchant for getting into petty squabbles and spending the evenings at the local police station. A brainwave makes Suma pretend one fine day, that she is the spokesperson of the local deity Kambakkattu Devi, and she finds her husband's alcohol addiction having disappeared. However, Vishwam and Suma herself can only gape open-mouthed, as she gets glorified in no time and rises to holy heights.

In perhaps one of the best written scenes in the film, a flustered woman who has been traumatized by her husband's abhorrent behavior, seeks the blessings of Sumangala Devi and begs her to provide a solution. Without batting an eyelid, the Devi whispers, that if the lady could be seated for a long while on the throne just like her, there might indeed be a way out of the misery.

The film that thus focuses on a very contemporary issue, is certainly not without its blemishes. There almost seems an attempt to commercialize the theme, perhaps thereby attempting to make it relatable to the masses even further. This is especially visible in the scenes that involve Suma's son in the latter half of the film. The boy, estranged from his mother, becomes visibly distraught and soon tries to meet up with her in a sequence that feels utterly obligatory.

The Ahsram as a whole, is too much of a caricature, and Sivaraman (Sreeraman) who runs it, is an archetypal villain, with henchmen and explosives at hand. His beckoning the Sanyasin to his chamber at night is a chestnut that has been done to death in similar films. The play of coincidences too is aplenty in the film, and it reduces the believability to a large extent, though it aids in keeping the viewers amused.

Kavya Madhavan, who has dubbed for the character herself, lives the role, and in the scenes that require her to shed her human traits and assume godly ones, she's almost a miracle. Her almost unique voice does play a major role in lending strength to the character further more, and. Irshad offers fine support in the role of a helpless husband, who can only watch as his wife rises to holy heights.

'Bhakthajanangalude Sraddhakku' offers a word of caution against rash judgments, and is more concerned about individual perceptions than about faith itself, as an entity. For the most part, it's unassuming and honest, and even when it gives in to a few cinematic obligations, it remains a deeply humane and compassionate film.

In an interesting note, Top Mollywood actress Kavya Madhavan has started writing her public exams for the 12th standard. Popular Malayalam actors Suresh Gopi, Jayaram, Dileep and Kavya Madhavan, who campaigned for actor-turned-politician K.B. Ganesh Kumar of the Kerala Congress (B), a member of the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF), are facing a 'red wrath' from Marxist cadres in Kollam district.

Allegedly, on Monday, the Marxist cadres (who support the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPM) Kollam district secretary K. Rajagopal) tore the posters of the latest releases China Town and Christian Bothers involving the actors.

Reacting to the issue, CPM MP K.N. Balagopal said: "We condemn it. Maybe what happened (was) a spontaneous reaction." However, comedian and character actor Jagdeesh, who also campaigned for the UDF, reacted differently, saying: "Any publicity is good for a new film!"

Film actor Kavya Madhavan will be appointed as the brand ambassador of Kerala Soaps and Oils, Kozhikode.

Industries Minister Elamaram Karim will make the declaration at a function to be held on Kozhikode beach at 6 p.m. on March 1.

A. Pradeep Kumar, MLA, told presspersons on Sunday that Ms. Kavya had agreed to endorse the brand free of cost. The company, run by the Kerala State Industrial Enterprises (KSIE), was built in two phases.

It produces three brands of toilet soap — Kerala Sandal Soap, Thrill Chempakam and Thrill Exotica — and a washing soap, Washwell.

Three more brands, Vep, Kairali and Rhythm, would come out in March. The company also had plans to produce washing powder. Sample Soaps for Rs.5 and Rs.2 would be in market by May, the MLA said.

Managing Director of KSIE Feby Verghese said that an extensive network had been set up for marketing the company's products all over the State. The products were available in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and UAE.

Additional Chief Secretary T. Balakrishnan will deliver the keynote address at the function on Tuesday. Ms.Kavya will address the gathering.

Chairman of KSIE Skaria Thomas, Mayor A.K. Premajam and M.K. Raghavan, MP, will be present.

The function will be followed by a musical programme led by noted actor Kalabhavan Mani.
