Dileep is back with a bang! His Pappi Appacha is turning out to be the biggest hit of summer of 2010. The star has made a fantastic comeback to mainstream commercial cinema.
Anoop, Dileep’s brother has produced and distributed Pappi Appacha, directed by Mamas with Innocent and Dileep playing father and son, along with Kavya Madhavan doing the female lead. The film was scathed by critics and industry people as “crass and crude comedy”, but the common man seems to like this masala entertainer.
But Dileep’s lucky streak started after he did “pooja” at Guruvayoor temple before the release of the film. And the ongoing fight between distributors and theatres resulted in no new releases for the last three Fridays. This helped Pappi Appacha as there was no opposition and the summer special family audiences lapped it up, making the film a super hit.
The trade feels if Pokkiri Raja and Alexander the Great had released, the Dileep comedy would not have been such a big hit. Plus the fact Lal directed In Ghost House Inn, collections started dropping after a fantastic opening.
The film has taken a distributors share of Rs 2.82 crore from 73 releasing stations in 23 days (up to May 5). Says Anoop: “It is my biggest hit till date. The film has been made at a cost of Rs 3.5 Crore and it looks like it will make around Rs 4 to 4.5 crore from theatrical collections alone.”
Remember there are other revenue streams like television and Home Video rights which will fetch the producers another Rs 2 crore. In short Pappi Appacha, has given Dileep a new lease of life at the box-office.
